Halloween Safety

To help residents and trick-or-treaters stay safe during Halloween festivities, the Oakdale Police Department offers safety tips for pedestrians and motorists.

Costume Safety

  • Wear light colored clothing, bright costumes, or add reflective tape to dark colored costumes.
  • Avoid costumes that have long hanging fabric that could cause falls or potentially catch on fire.

Trick-or-Treat Safety

  • Avoid trick-or-treating alone.  Walk in groups or with trusted adults.
  • Plan a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to stay visible.
  • Adults should inspect candy prior to consumption.

Pedestrian Safety Reminders

  • Walk on sidewalks and paths when available.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Never run into the street or between parked vehicles.

Motorist Safety

  • Slow down!  Be cautious of pedestrians, especially in residential neighborhoods.
  • Turn your headlights on!
  • Obey crosswalk laws and yield to pedestrians.
  • Watch for pedestrians walking on or near the street.
  • Be alert and cautious of children running into the street.
  • Obey all traffic control signs and signals.

Have a fun and safe Halloween!
